Who is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a periodontics specialist. Periodontists treat oral diseases and inflammations by rendering treatment such as:

  • Scaling and Root Planing
  • Removing damaged gum tissue
  • Installing implants and their supported structures.
  • Removing or recontouring the damaged jaw bone area surrounding the tooth.
  • Transplants bone to fix damaged jaw.

A Periodontists’ task is to save your natural tooth using surgical or medical treatment.

When Should I See a Periodontist?

Here are the cases when you need to see a periodontist:

  • Gum disease (most popular are gingivitis and periodontitis)
  • Loose teeth
  • Receding Gums
  • Toothache
  • Bleeding gums
  • Gum color change
  • Gum inflammation
  • Missing tooth (teeth)
  • Bite changes
  • When thorough cleaning is necessary

If you’ve never visited a periodontist before it’s time to schedule for a check up.

Why Schedule If Everything Seems to Be Ok?

It is well known that prevention is the best form of dental care. It may help to avoid many consequences in the future. The periodontist will check the state of your gums and teeth. If necessary – a doctor will recommend how to look after them. Remember, your overall health depends on your oral health also.

Is Every Dentist a Periodontist?

No, only those dentists who completed 3 additional years of periodontics training can be a Periodontist.

Can a Periodontist Do Dental Implants?

Yes, the Periodontist is the provider who places dental implants, crowns, dental bridges and dentures.

Can You Get Dental Implants With Periodontal Disease?

The answer is yes and no. It really depends on the severity of bone loss. If we can add bone and regenerate it enough to support the implant then absolutely! If the bone loss is severe then we would most likely recommend against it due to the risk of failure. However, we always refer our patients to have special imaging such as ConeScan (dental ct scan) to get a good look at the bone density or level.
